The song “Slow Slow Song” (声声慢) creatively adapts the classical Chinese lyric poetry form cipai (Tune Pattern), while incorporating lines from Li Qingzhao’s renowned poem “Seeking, seeking, searching, searching, / Lonely, lonely, quiet, quiet”. Through minimalist yet vivid imagery—“blue bricks, white horse, mountain flowers, banana leaves, raindrops, chimney smoke”—it weaves a cinematic narrative. The melody’s folkloric cadence, paired with ethereal operatic harmonies, creates a uniquely expansive soundscape that bridges centuries.
From Mountain Trails to Studio Recording
In 2012, Cui Kaichao—a plains-born student newly arrived in Sichuan’s mountainous terrain—found inspiration during a trip to Jiezi Ancient Town beneath Qingcheng Mountain. After attending a music festival on behalf of his distant beloved, he wandered stone streets softened by moss, witnessing a rider on a grey-white horse. This moment, combined with the patter of rain on his hostel’s eaves, crystallized into the song’s lyrics. Nearly four years later, on the cusp of graduation, he recorded “Slow Slow Song” for his debut album Galloping Carriage in a Chengdu studio, with producer Zhou Cheng transforming the dormitory-born composition into a studio masterpiece through layered instrumentation and haunting vocals.
