Background Story of “Blue and White Porcelain”
This song was released on November 2, 2007, and has become one of the most popular tracks by Jay Chou周杰伦. Since its release, it has been widely covered by other artists and has gone viral on TikTok and other social media platforms.
Inspiration from Antiques
The song “Blue and White Porcelain” (青花瓷) was composed by Jay Chou with lyrics and title by Vincent Fang. Fang’s inspiration came from his antique-collecting friends, who sparked his idea to name the song after a national treasure. Initially, he considered “Bronze Vessel” (青铜器), linking its ancient inscriptions to love’s mystery and timelessness.
From Bronze to Porcelain
However, Jay’s soft, melodious tune evoked images of misty Jiangnan (江南), making “Bronze Vessel” feel too heavy. Fang then researched Ru kiln porcelain, but “Ru Kiln” (汝窑) sounded awkward as a title. Yet, its “sky-blue glaze” inspired the iconic line “Sky-blue waits for misty rain” (天青色等烟雨). After much deliberation, “Blue and White Porcelain” was chosen.
A Humorous Misunderstanding
Before finalizing the song, Fang shared the title with Jay, who misheard “Blue and White Porcelain” (青花瓷) as “Frog Pond” (青蛙池)—jokingly asking if it was about “frogs leaping into a pond to express deep love.”
